Tashirojima
Tashirojima is a small island off the coast of Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture, widely known throughout Japan as “Cat Island.” More than 100 cats are said to live here, outnumbering the island’s human residents.
As you stroll around the island, you’ll see cats living freely and peacefully in their natural environment. It’s a soothing experience that offers a kind of relaxation you won’t find in busy city life.
The island is accessible by a ferry ride of about 40 minutes from Ishinomaki Port. Walking around the entire island takes roughly 2–3 hours, making it perfect for a leisurely exploration while enjoying encounters with its friendly feline residents.
For cat lovers, Tashirojima is truly a sanctuary. The quiet fishing‑village scenery combined with the carefree lifestyle of the cats creates a heartwarming atmosphere that makes the island unforgettable.
Koroneko-do

Kuroneko-do is a small rest area and shop known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and charming cat-themed decorations. Both inside and outside the shop, you’ll find plenty of relaxed, friendly cats lounging around as if they’re part of the staff. It’s a cozy spot where visitors can take a break and enjoy the unique, cat-filled charm of Tashirojima.
Shima no Eki (Island Station)

Shima no Eki is a convenient stop for travelers exploring Tashirojima. Here, you can enjoy light snacks and drinks while browsing local specialty products and even learning the names of all the cats that live on the island.
One of the highlights happens at 12:00 noon, when the island’s cats gather for their lunchtime feeding. Dozens of cats appear all at once, creating a lively and adorable scene that visitors won’t want to miss.
Nitado area

Nittoda is the main area of Tashirojima and the place where you’ll find the largest number of cats on the island. The port, narrow alleys, and traditional houses create a peaceful atmosphere where cats roam freely and comfortably. Many of them can be seen sunbathing, relaxing on stone walls, or casually interacting with locals and visitors.
It’s the best spot to experience the true charm of Cat Island — a place where people and cats live side by side in a slow, gentle rhythm that feels far removed from everyday city life.
